I often hear dieters say, “I have no control!”
Hate to break it to you folks but, YES, you do have control.
I want to touch on, albeit not deeply enough, on a too seldom covered topic - and that is the mind-body connection.
Basically, it comes down to this: YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT! (Or don’t eat!) OK, here comes the science. Turn off IM, Facebook and the cell, sit up and pay attention because you NEED to know this - (if you want to lose weight that is!).
First of all we need to talk about the brain. The brain’s sole function is to keep the body alive. That’s it. Simple.
How does it do that you ask? Well, I couldn’t write that book, and even if I could, I doubt you’d want to read it.
Basically the brain is the communication control center. We touch a hot stove, the nervous system sends a signal to the brain, the brain sends a signal to the musculoskeletal system and tells it to MOVE!
What happens when we eat? Or don’t eat?
Every single thing we put into our bodies (or DON’T put into our bodies!) effects our hormones. Hormones are the messages. Hormones tell our brain what is going on in our body. Our brain interprets that message and responds, either by telling the hormones to do something different, or saying, “All is well, carry on!”
Everything we eat consists of protein, carbohydrates and fat. OK, well, too much of the stuff we eat these days has some other funky things that I don’t know how to spell added - but let’s let’s just keep me appearing semi-literate shall we?
Our body, in order to function properly AND stay alive, require some combination of all three macro-nutrients. Our body ALSO requires a certain energy intake level. Energy = calories. Ideally that energy intake (calories) are sufficient to support our bodily functions. Eat too many, you get fat. Eat too few, and you get skinny. Or do you?
And what in the world does ANY of this have to do with out of control eating?
Cliff hanger. Sorry. Stayed tuned for part 2!
