What to Eat

Tom Venuto’s, Burn the Fat - Feed the Muscle holds a very special place in my heart. This is the nutrition and workout program that rescued me from a miserable and incredibly ineffective 1.5 year long experience with Weight Watchers & South Beach.

It took me 1.5 years to lose 45lbs starving myself and running myself ragged on the treadmill and tripping over the stepper doing Firm DVDs.

Out of sheer desperation because the pounds were starting to quickly come back on after getting sick and taking a week off my diet (to the tune of 11lbs!), I happened across Burn the Fat - Feed the Muscle. [click to continue…]

    in Fact or Fiction?

I’ve begun following the daily diet of a Registered Dietitian over at SELF Magazine. Yesterday I tracked everything she and I consumed. I’m going to track a few more days for a more detailed comparison. However, one thing I find quite interesting when comparing our consumption for yesterday is this:

RD total calories: 1860  Total solid food volume: 1.7 lbs.

My total calories: 1680  Total solid food volume: 4 lbs!

I had LESS calories and MORE FOOD! Maybe you should eat like me and not like her?

How often have you been hungry while on a reduced calorie diet?  Food volume has been shown to have an effect on satiety (how hungry you feel)!  Would you rather eat 4 lbs of food a day or 1.7 lbs of food a day? Could you even EAT 4 lbs of food a day? I bet many of you can’t - even if you are overweight!

How many times have you gone off your diet because you were just too hungry? How many times have you eaten more calories than you needed simply because you were starving? Food volume can help you feel satisfied, therefore not hungry, and so you will be more likely to stick with it and therefore LOSE MORE WEIGHT! [click to continue…]

  • I generally don’t pay much attention to diet, fitness or weight loss advice in mainstream magazines such as SELF.  (You shouldn’t either!) Most of the advice is too general and often not applicable to the typical overweight dieter.  However, this little tid bit is some of the best “how-to lose weight” advice you’ll get!

Quit fighting with yourself over food and you might banish cravings for good. A study published in Behaviour and Research Therapy revealed that women who accept that they lust after Hershey’s Kisses found it easier to resist the urge to unwrap them. Researchers taught the women in the study to recognize their limited ability to control their thoughts about certain foods. Then they encouraged them to give themselves permission to have those thoughts and let them go rather than acting on them. “Think of cravings like any other tic in your body, like hiccups and itches,” Forman says. “Tell yourself, ‘My mind is having a craving right now.’ Pretty soon, you’ll see that the impulse to order something fattening is not the same as actually ordering it.” Use this mental trick the next time you’re at a restaurant and the siren song of a bacon cheeseburger threatens to derail your healthy plan. Breathe, count to three and select the grilled salmon and green salad. Then eat them serenely.

Up next? I think I’m going to pick apart the diet of a Registered Dietitian - you know, the folks giving out weight loss advice. That’s gonna be fun!

I’ve got lots of stuff brewing right now, including a photo shoot for an article promoting Tom Venuto’s new book, “The Body Fat Solution”.

I’ll resume the “Is Your Eating Out Of Control” series later next week.

    in Fact or Fiction?

If you missed it, check out part 1 of this series, “Is Your Eating Out Of Control”.

We left of speaking about how hormones are the messengers which tell our brain what is going on in our body. Basically.

WikiAnswers tells me there are “about 1953 hormones in the human body”. I can’t attest to the accuracy of that statement and I don’t feel like spending the afternoon Googling.  What I do know is that there are only a handful we need concern ourselves with for the purposes of figuring out, once and for all, how-to lose weight!

BUT - before we get into the boring big word science most of you probably don’t care to know ……. I want to ask you a question:

Think of a food you HATE and will NOT eat, no way, no how - I dunno, maybe anchovies? My sister hates and will not eat potatoes. She has NEVER, not since the day she was born, swallowed potatoes.

How about some fried spiders - considered a delicacy in Cambodia.

Do Fried Spiders Cause You Lose Control Of What You Eat?

If I put your “I will NOT eat that food” in front of you right now, (Fried Spiders anyone?) do you think you would be able to control whether or not you ate it? [click to continue…]
